APconnections Announces General Availability of New Network Access Control Module

APconnections, a leading supplier of plug-and-play bandwidth shaping products, today announced the general availability of their new NetEqualizer network access control module (NAC).

The NAC is a fully integrated module that runs on the popular NetEqualizer bandwidth shaping appliance. The feature is perfect for Internet providers implementing a pay-as-you-go mode such as those found in hotels, metro hot spots, airports, and college residence halls.

The features of the module include:

time-based usage by login
redirection for unauthorized users
custom branding
group-based block licensing, and much more.
“Many of our customers were screaming for us to do something in this area; they love our NetEqualizer bandwidth controller, but were oftentimes frustrated by their existing choices for network access control,” said Eli Riles, vice president of sales at APconnections. “So, we responded with a solid product that meets market needs without putting a hole in your wallet.”

In its initial release, module pricing will start at $2,500; however, those with an existing NetEqualizer software subscription (NSS) will qualify for a full credit. For more information, contact APconnections at 1-800-918-2763 or via email at sales@netequalizer.com.

The NetEqualizer is a plug-and-play bandwidth control and WAN/Internet optimization appliance that is flexible and scalable. When the network is congested, NetEqualizer’s unique “behavior shaping” technology gives priority to latency-sensitive applications, such as VoIP and email. It does it all dynamically and automatically, improving on other bandwidth shaping technology out there.

APconnections is a privately held company founded in 2003 and is based in Lafayette, Colorado.

SDG Systems Announces Linux-based TDS Nomad

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa., May 1, 2008 -- SDG Systems, LLC today announced the general availability and support of the TDS Nomad rugged mobile hand-held computer running the Linux(R) operating system. SDG Systems will market and sell the Linux-based Nomad, providing technical and warranty support. The Nomad provides a high level of device integration including Bluetooth, 802.11, GPS, Camera, Barcode scanning and USB host and client ports. All Nomads also include a high-resolution screen (480x640 portrait VGA) for sharp, clear images and a 806 MHz PXA 320 processor. The USB host port has been tested to support mass storage, keyboard, mouse, Ethernet and RS-232 serial adapters.

"The level of hardware integration in the Nomad is outstanding," said Lester Hightower, CTO of 10East Corporation. "The difference that the Nomad makes in our applications is immediately apparent. The fast processor, full VGA screen, integrated barcode scanner and USB host are excellent improvements over the TDS Recon, which we also deploy. Having these improvements in the Nomad, without sacrificing any ruggedness, is a big plus."

Like the field-proven Linux-based TDS Recon, the Nomad meets the MIL-STD-810F standard for drops, vibration and temperature extremes. It also has an IP67 rating, meaning it is dustproof and waterproof. "SDG has added a rugged operating system to a rugged piece of hardware and by so doing, given people in harsh situations one less thing to worry about," said Chris Garrett, Senior Software Engineer at Lockheed Martin. The Nomad is designed for all-day operation in extreme outdoor and industrial environments. Battery testing yielded over 12 hours of operation with Bluetooth and 802.11 both enabled and with the screen backlight at 50 percent brightness. Maximum battery life is approximately 25 hours.

SDG Systems also announced software enhancements to their Linux implementation. "With our latest software release, we are providing a general mechanism for users to run their own application exclusively, effectively creating a way to build single-purpose devices rather than a general purpose PDA," said Todd Blumer, President of SDG Systems. "This mechanism allows our Enterprise customers to write a Qt(R) for Embedded Linux application, for example, with a standard software build from us. The customer can reduce their support burden by training users on the application and not the PDA interface."

The Linux-based Nomad utilizes version 2.6.21 of the Linux kernel. The standard user interface is based on Qtopia(R) PDA Edition, version 2.2, which SDG Systems has enhanced to manage the integrated devices. The operating system utilities are based on the Angstrom Linux distribution. A GPE (X11, GTK+, Qt4) user interface option is in development and is available for beta testing. Qtopia 4 support is planned. In addition to the hardware products, SDG Systems provides Linux development support and services.

Pricing and Availability

The Nomad has a 806 MHz PXA320 processor with 128 MB RAM and 512 MB or 1 GB of nonvolatile flash memory and sells for $1649 to $2299, based on the level of hardware features. Additional integrated communication options are planned. The Nomad has a one-year parts and labor warranty with an extended warranty also available. The Linux-based Nomad units may be ordered in OD Green, Yellow and Gray colors and are available immediately. A developers' kit for the Linux Nomad is also available at no cost.

New Mini Maxwell can now emulate bandwidth constrained network links

InterWorking Labs Announces New Version of Mini Maxwell, the Portable Network Emulator

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- InterWorking Labs, developers of network test, emulation and optimization products to improve the quality and operation of voice/video/data networks, today announced a new version of Mini Maxwell, the popular, portable, network emulator.

Developers, IT managers, and test engineers use Mini Maxwell in a variety of environments and situations to help them evaluate and solve network problems. In addition to emulating bandwidth constrained network connections (rate limitation), the new Mini Maxwell also features:

-- Higher maximum packet rate
-- More accurate timing
-- Faster web interface
-- Larger and faster internal flash memory file system
-- Auto MDI/MDI-X (auto-crossover) Ethernet interfaces
-- Faster CPU (500mhz)
-- More memory (256Mbytes)
-- Two USB 2.0 ports

Easy to Use Web Browser Interface

Enter the URL. Click on a button. Then select the impairments you want to use (packet drop/lose, duplicate, delay (latency)/jitter, reorder, burst). In less than ten minutes, you will be emulating a real-world network environment on your desktop, at the tradeshow booth, or in a conference room. Online help and sample network scenarios help you move into more sophisticated emulations. Save your emulated network (one click) and reload it at a later time (one click).

No Fuss Set Up and Configuration

Mini Maxwell acts as a "bump on the wire" and is invisible to the devices around it. As network traffic passes through, Mini Maxwell filters the packets of interest, impairs them, and sends them on their way.

Robust Functionality

Mini Maxwell uses standard and user defined traffic filters, organized into multiple bands of traffic, with a full range of impairments, operating bi-directionally.

"I have found Mini Maxwell very valuable for optimizing client/server performance. Now with the bandwidth limitation feature in the new Mini Maxwell package, I can test my server application on slower links," said Craig Watkins, Chief Technical Officer at Transcend, Inc. "I pack up Mini Maxwell with my laptop computer so I have everything I need when traveling."

The new Mini Maxwell is available now from InterWorking Labs at $1,499.00 plus tax and shipping.

About InterWorking Labs

InterWorking Labs creates network test, emulation and optimization products to improve the quality and operation of voice/video/data networks. Developers, IT managers and test engineers use these products to validate network quality and operation.

InterWorking Labs Products

SilverCreek, the official SNMP Test Suite, verifies correct operation of SNMP agents and their standard and private MIBs and checks for vulnerabilities to attacks. The Maxwell and Mini Maxwell Network Emulators help engineers create real-world network scenarios in the lab to evaluate how their product will behave under adverse network conditions. The Maxwell TCP/IP and SIP Test Environments provide vulnerability and robustness testing of network products.
